Obituary – Syukree Hussain

A late nite sms from Rakyat@Work brought sad news.

delCapo remembers first noticing Syukree at a DAP organised forum on the DNA Bill in November at the Chinese Assembly Hall. Subsequent meetings at various vigils and civil society events include the weekly PJ Candle Vigil….. I remember Syukree was one of those who stayed til early hour of the morning outside the PJ Police Station when 23 of our friends were detained during the infamous “9-11” vigil session… he was still there when delCapo left at 3am….

Though never really formally acquainted…. and I must admit i’ve been guilty of not making a point to introduce myself & get to know this tireless comrade (minta maaf, brother) … it is obvious that Syukree was a well respected activist and journalist during his time. Tributes can be found here, here, here & here.

Syukree has left behind some great work & words – his video, his pix, his blog.

We have lost a comrade and a good anak bangsa Malaysia tonight. May his soul rest in peace.

    It was a shock to both Stephen and me. Last night we found out and were unable to deal with the news of his sudden demise. May he find eternal peace now. Great tribute to him. Simple, short and sweet! You’re a great friend to remember him this way, DC.

    The real Malaysian warrior
    “Anak Bangsa Malaysia”
    not just costume-skin-deep.

    Whilst Bernard Khoo made his speech at last Sunday’s Mesra Rakyat Candlelight Vigil, he jokingly told the audience that Syukree was a masked SB and asked me to record and put Syukree on youtube.com. So I did. View 1:25-1:45 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUNTbd4XZf8

    Here’s what Syukree would probably say to his family and all his friends…

    “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Tim 4:7

    Do not stand at my grave and weep;
    I am not there. I do not sleep.
    I am a thousand winds that blow.
    I am the diamond glints on snow.
    I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
    I am the gentle autumn rain.
    When you awaken in the morning’s hush
    I am the swift uplifting rush
    Of quiet birds in circled flight.
    I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
    I am not there. I did not die.

    – Mary Elizabeth Frye

    May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

    The first time I met Syukree was at A&W near Amcorp Mall during the vigil on 9 November. At one of the subsequent vigils he came on a yellow bicycle.Then I saw him with his mask. Not being familiar with him, I have been casually trying to figure him out. With all these tribute to him , I now understand him better.

    We sat together for lunch at the Bar Council auditorium during the first anniversary of the detention of Hindraf 5 on 13 December .I then got to know him better and even after that for the past few days he has been in my mind for some brief moments.

    He definitely left an impression and what a guy.He is definitely a nice guy and an authentic stamp of an activist.

    RIP Syukree.

    Some men are born to tread the conventional way while some that are born to cut and change the rules, for me Syukree Hussain was one such person. He was a comrade who never gave up and always stood by his pals especially when we were fighting for a cause. I hope this memorial website can make his memory last for many years to come.
